Lambi betting explained

Lambi is the Indian name for a runs line on a team's full innings total. It works like a session bet, with a No and a Yes number, but it covers the whole innings. You bet No if you think the total will finish at or below the lower figure, or Yes if it will reach the higher one.

Quick overview

  • How is the lambi line set? Before the match the line is built from the venue's recent scores, the pitch report and both line-ups.
  • How is lambi different from a session bet? A session ends at a set over, so a fast start can win it even if the team collapses later.
  • Does lambi work for a chasing team? It does, but the target caps the total.
  • Innings completes: Settled on the final innings total
  • Common mistake: Backing Yes in a chase when the line is above the target.

How is the lambi line set?

Before the match the line is built from the venue's recent scores, the pitch report and both line-ups. During the innings it moves with every ball, so the lambi at over 10 already includes the runs on the board and the wickets lost.

  • Wickets in hand matter more than run rate. A team at 90 for 1 after 10 overs has more upside than 95 for 5.
  • Death-over dew in the second innings pushes totals up.

How is lambi different from a session bet?

A session ends at a set over, so a fast start can win it even if the team collapses later. A lambi only settles on the final innings total, so you need a view on the whole innings, including the death overs.

  • Lambi suits pre-match analysis. Sessions suit live betting.
  • Some bettors use a session bet early and a lambi bet later to cover different parts of the innings.

Does lambi work for a chasing team?

It does, but the target caps the total. Once a chasing side wins, the innings ends, so a lambi line close to the target behaves very differently from one in the first innings. Check whether the line is above or below what the team needs.

  • A line above the target needs the winning shot to be a big one, so it's rarely worth backing Yes.
