Session betting explained

Session betting is a runs line for part of an innings, usually the score at 6, 10 or 15 overs. The site shows two numbers, such as 52 and 53. You bet No if you think the score will finish at or below the lower figure, or Yes if you think it will reach the higher one.

Quick overview

  • How do session lines work? Each session is a total for the innings so far at a fixed over, so a 10-over session includes the first six.
  • What moves a session line? In the powerplay it's the pitch and the openers.
  • How is a session different from fancy and lambi? A session covers part of an innings.
  • Set over completed: Settled on the runs scored by then, extras included
  • Common mistake: Betting live on a delayed stream.

How do session lines work?

Each session is a total for the innings so far at a fixed over, so a 10-over session includes the first six. The line moves after every ball during play. Most sites also price each session before the match starts, when the line is based on the venue, the pitch and the two line-ups.

  • Sessions settle as soon as the set over ends. You don't wait for the match result.
  • Second-innings sessions are often priced more tightly, because the target tells everyone how fast the chase needs to go.
  • In Tests, a session can mean a day's playing session between lunch and tea rather than a set number of overs.

What moves a session line?

In the powerplay it's the pitch and the openers. In the middle overs it's spin and wickets: a side that loses two quick wickets usually slows down while new batters settle. At the death it's dew, batting depth and the quality of the yorker bowlers.

  • Hard, true pitches and short boundaries push lines up. Slow or dusty pitches pull them down.
  • Count wickets in hand at the start of each session. Fewer wickets usually means fewer runs.
  • Evening dew helps batters in the second innings and often isn't fully priced in.
