Top batsman betting explained

Top batsman betting is a bet on which player scores the most runs, either for one team (top team batsman) or across both sides (top match batsman). Prices reflect each batter's chance, so openers and in-form top-order players are short and lower-order players are long.

What versions of the top batsman market exist?

Top team batsman covers one side's XI. Top match batsman covers both teams. In Tests, some sites also price a top batsman for each innings. Check which one you're clicking before you stake, because the same player has different odds in each.

  • Top team batsman is the most common and the easiest to research.
  • Top match batsman pays more but asks you to beat 22 players.

How do you pick a top batsman?

Start with batting position, then form, then the venue. Batters at the top of the order face the most balls. In T20 cricket a fast-scoring number three can be worth more than a slow opener, because strike rate decides how many runs fit into 20 overs.

  • Use the last five innings for form. Career averages hide slumps and hot streaks.
  • Look at the opposition's bowling. A batter who struggles against left-arm spin is a risk if that's what they'll face.
  • Flat pitches with short boundaries spread runs across the order. Slow pitches favour the batter who can rotate strike.
  • Compare your view with the price. If you think a player's chance is 25% and the odds are 5.00 (20%), that's value.

What's different about top batsman betting in the IPL?

Batting orders are fairly settled, which makes research easier, but the impact player rule can add an extra batter partway through. Overseas openers also tend to dominate the top of the market, so look harder at domestic batters who may be priced too long.

  • Check the final XI after the toss. A late change in the top three changes the whole market.
  • Late in the season, workload management can rest overseas players without much notice.

What mistakes do bettors make with top batsman markets?

  • Backing a lower-order hitter at long odds in a T20. They may not bat at all.
  • Picking on reputation when the player is out of form.
  • Missing the tie rule. A dead heat can halve your return.
